The Millinery Arts Alliance (MAA) is one of Chicago's premier organizations of professional hat makers and recently voted Victoria Magazine’s "Women Entrepreneurs of the Year" for 2002 (by a nationwide poll consisting of the magazines devoted readers). In the summer of 1995, several of these milliners banded together with a two-part goal: To continue the vanishing art of couture millinery and to provide hat lovers events at which to display their finery. www.millineryartsalliance.com

Susan has formally studied design, historic textiles and clothing, and garment construction, in addition to the creation of millinery using decades old techniques. Her studies are reflected in her millinery designs. She has also been influenced by the millinery styles of the 1920's and 1930's and strives to achieve the fine construction found in the millinery of that era. The majority of her hats are created by hand and not by machine. Susan began designing and creating hats for primarily three reasons. First was a need to find hats that fit real head sizes, not those of mannequins. After starting by making hats for herself, she branched to others. The influence of her late paternal grandmother, a lover and wear of beautiful hats, was another reason and the last reason was her need to create beautiful objects and share them with other women. It is Susan's philosophy that not only should hats enhance the wearer, but should also be fun to wear and should be meticulously crafted of fine materials. Her millinery may be constructed of fine straws, quality fur velours, felts or interesting fabrics www.moksimillinery.com

Women’s hats have definitely evolved over the years. For several hundred years before the twentieth century, womens hat were associated with the elite classes. These hats were not very functional, but were adorned with jewels, feathers, precious metals, and exotic fabrics, which made them prized possessions. For average to lower income women, the only hats available were cloth bonnets. In the twentieth century hats became affordable for all classes, and women wore them proudly. Popular styles of women’s hats were the Cloche, Breton, Big Brim, Swinger, and the Off The Face. These styles remain strong today with designers like Kaminski, Callanan, and Betmar, who still design and create hats that are of exceptional quality, and original design. www.hatsinthebelfry.com
